How do people tamper with the Odometer to reverse the mileage somehow and make it less than it was before?

I am in the process of purchasing a second hand vehicle and have detected odometer fraud on various occasions. I find myself asking this question everytime I encounter a case of this. re out of curiousity, I would like to know. Do they lift the rear end of the automobile with a jack and engage reverse and place a brick on the accelerator if the car is rear wheel drive. My other theory is if the car has a digital odometer they simply change the whole instrument gauge cluster including odometer for another one with a lower mileage. The odometer problem ocurred on a 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser 4.2 Turbo Diesel VX with a digital odometer. The seller of said transportation describes it as having 70,000 km but on further investigation the previous owners confirmed the mileage when sold on the car of just 130,000 km. The guy is lying through his teeth. How do they do that stuff?

it is an urban legend that reverse will put the mileage back. any movement will add mileage. to tamper with the odometer is easy. they disconnect it. you know when you get pulled over because you dont know how fast you were going? same concept but yours isnt on purpose. people will buy cars disconnect them then reconnect and you get screwed with a trans and engine with way more mileage than ya thought. im not to sure about digital but i think they can got to a junk yard and pull one that might keep its last reading without reseting it.
